The legislative process begins with the introduction of a bill. The bill has three primary components: A title, a short description, and the full text. The title is what the bill is referred to as. A good title is one which is both short and captures the intent of the bill. The short description is simply a sentence or two which explains what the legislation will be doing. A good short description is one which someone unfamiliar with the legislation could read and roughly comprehend what the bill is about. Finally, the full text of the legislation goes in-depth about what exactly the legislation does. Full text is written in legalese and is incredibly detailed.
Once a bill has been introduced, debate on it will commence. By default, debate will last for 72 hours. During debate, members will argue over the merits of the legislation. Members should remain respectful during debate, and should not let the argument get personal or out of hand. In future versions of the Political Simulator, members may make motions to amend legislation, reduce time for debate, and more.
Once time for debate has ended, the legislation will proceed to a vote. Here, members may vote aye, nay, or abstain. Aye is a vote supporting the legislation, nay is a vote against the legislation, and abstain is not voting. Voting will be open for 72 hours by default. At the end of this 72 hours, if there are more aye votes than there are nay votes, it will be passed. If votes are tied or there are more nay votes than aye votes, the bill will be rejected.
Once voting has ended, all passed bills will automatically be placed in the Law Library. Players may view the full text, introduction and passage dates, and the vote count.
